In early 2008, the Network for Promoting Sustainability in Postgraduate Education & Research (ProSPER.Net), an initiative of United Nations University’s Institute of Advanced Study (UNUIAS), sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Environment, decided to fund a project on “Integrating Sustainable Development in Business Curricula”. This initiative quickly developed into a consortium of five regional universities, led by Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, involving Shinshu University, Japan, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia, Yonsei University, Korea, and Universiti Sains Malaysia. The overall objective of the project was to establish a consortium of regional Universities and Institutions committed to restructuring their provision of business education so as to “mainstream” sustainability issues in their curricula, teaching and learning. It was intended that the initiative would have a positive and sustainable impact upon the provision of business education in the region.
The Symposium held at Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, 4-5th June 2009, was an integral part of this ProSPER.Net research theme. It was structured so that members of the consortium could come together and share their ideas, research and experiences in a supportive and enjoyable setting. It was also intended that it would bring together stakeholders such as local companies and social businesses, so that they could network and share their needs and experiences. 82 people from 14 different countries participated in the event, and twenty people presented a paper or a talk.
